Why are they only investigating Mayor Silva, What about the rest of the council

Stockton is facing its share of challenges. As the city tries to get its financial house in order and address the violence that it has struggled with for the past few years, scandals and squabbles at the top of city government seem to dominate the headlines.

Emails from Mayor Anthony Silva about city business could shed important light on efforts to solve Stockton's problems. But getting those emails – which an expert said are public records – can be difficult.

Citing California's public records laws, News10 requested emails sent to and from Silva's work email account since he took office last January.

According to the records the city sent News10, Silva did not send a single message from his city email account for the entire months of May and June.

First off, News10 what do you think you are going to uncover, by getting his emails? Also, I don't get what you believe gives you the right to have records of his personal e-mails, text messeges and phone calls, because you don't! I am one who will stand by his side on this issue, and say that he should not hand over any personal account information, what the news station is doing here is extortion, we need to realize when the media is over-stepping the boundaries set in place by our constitution.

STOCKTON - Big money backing incumbent Mayor Ann Johnston and two council candidates has poured in from a wealthy businessman who lives in Nevada and made his fortune in the auto repossession industry.

Patrick K. Willis also bought Stockton's glitzy University Waterfront Plaza Hotel two years ago and turned around the once bankrupt business, giving him a personal interest in the city's vitality.

He also supports incumbent Councilman Dale Fritchen and newcomer Randy Hatch in the Nov. 6 election, contributing a total of $67,500, which makes him the largest single contributor, according to the candidates' most recent campaign statements.

Willis contributed $37,500 to Johnston, giving her a campaign fund of $105,235, including $20,000 from Stockton developer Alex Spanos. Willis was not available for comment Tuesday.

With Election time just around the corner, Stockton Citizens ask Johnston to step down!

Stockton charter is clear, Ralph White is right

The Record got it all wrong. As in many cases, The Record's opinion of Ralph Lee White in pursuit of following the city charter is all wrong ("Court decision brings more turmoil," Sept. 23, The Record).

White, who helped write and supervise the charter, has proven again that he is knowledgeable of how the good old boys, and in this case girls, work in our little backward city. The local San Joaquin County judge who rendered the original decision, should be sent back to school for a course in remedial reading.

The charter is very clear, and if White is a thorn in the side of city hall, then city hall should follow the charter. Ann Johnston is ineligible, and White is a citizen, who saw the law being broken and took action.

Frankly, The Record should be doing what White has done, but instead of having a nose for news, The Record has chosen to attack White by calling him a perennial mayoral candidate. Just so the editorial board knows, any citizen has the right to run for any office as often as they choose to do so.

The Record editorial board should spend its time on improving the quality of the newspaper, because the paper is ambiguous on many of its views.

Thank you Larry for sharing your thoughts. Most seem to have let my name slip out of the story, because I too am listed in this lawsuit against the mayor and the city. We are grateful you see it our way, but doesn't it seem like this case should be decided soon.

The Record never reports the news as we see it, but rather from their own point of view. I have had a few blurbs in the newspaper as of late, and they were all written out of context, and I was mis-quoted a few times!

I think if we have no ruling by Nov. 5th the only right thing for Ann Johnston to do, would be to drop out. I am saying we the people, need to make sure our bylaws, drafted in the Charter don't get manipulated by anyone. Wish us luck, and remember to vote for Anthony Silva for Mayor!

STOCKTON - The Stockton Police Officers Association on Sunday announced its endorsements for the upcoming race for Stockton City Council.

The union representing Stockton's police officers picked only one incumbent in four races up for election this year.

That incumbent is District 6 Councilman Dale Fritchen. The group endorsed Moses Zapien in District 4 and Randy Hatch in District 2. In the race for mayor, the group endorsed Anthony Silva. (But the Police used a quote from Greg Pitsch?)

Fritchen is running against Michael Tubbs. Zapien is running against incumbent Councilwoman Diana Lowery and Theresa Velazquez. Hatch is running against Councilwoman Kathy Miller.

In the race for mayor, Silva is running against incumbent Ann Johnston, and Ralph Lee White, Jimmie Rishwain, James Butler and Gregory Pitsch.

The primary is Tuesday. The district city council races will not be decided until November, when voters citywide choose district winners. Only the top two candidates in each district will progress to the November contest.

The mayor's race, however, could be decided if one candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote Tuesday. If nobody wins a majority of votes, the top two candidates will compete in a November runoff.

Oprah Buys Stockton Election

Forbes may not consider her the most powerful celebrity on the planet (that honor was recently bestowed to Jennifer Lopez), but whenever Oprah Winfrey does anything, it's definitely a big deal.

And when the billionaire media mogul makes a completely unexpected move--like getting personally involved in a central California election and donating $10,000 to a 21-year old underdog yet to graduate from college--it's guaranteed to upend virtually every corner of said contest.

The race in question is for the seat on Stockton's city council representing the southernmost district of the 300,000-person metropolitan area. The position is currently held by incumbent 52-year old Republican Dale Fritchen, but is being contested by Stanford senior Michael Tubbs.

The Stockton Record reports:

Tubbs said he gained Winfrey's attention in April when she visited Stanford University, where Tubbs will graduate in June. During a luncheon, somebody mentioned to Winfrey that Tubbs is a City Council candidate back at home.
"She looked at me and said, 'How old are you?'" Tubbs recalled. "She kept coming back to Stockton. 'Tell me about the city.' I told her about the homicides, how the city is broke and the disconnect."

Pitsch Responds Late, but it's better now than never

Stockton mayoral candidate Gregory Pitsch, responding to a March blog post critical of his inexperience, writes:

“Just to fill you in on a few things. I have governing experience, from joining a young men’s fraternity, DeMolay. I was also A City of Manteca employee for 4 years, mostly in the parks and recreation department as a supervisor, and as a coach at Walter Woodward Elementary. After which I worked a 3 year stretch at Raisch Grade-Way (RGW) Construction as a Junior Estimator, and Take-off engineer. Working at RGW gave me a fresh look at what the General Contractor is looking for, and how they bid Public Work.

”I wouldn’t necessarily say I have no experience, because I am the President of an up and coming Record Label here in Stockton, and an urban Clothing Line. I am doing the best that I can, with the limited resources I have. Please understand, I am not just another young guy in Stockton, I have the drive of a Leader who WILL make a difference in this city.”

“Thank You,

”Future Mayor of Stockton Gregory Pitsch.”

I was hard on Pitsch because I have lost all tolerance for the incompetence that brought Stockton to the brink of bankruptcy, the breakdown of municipal services and international shame. Stockton needs seasoned leaders, not dilettantes. But Pitsch has every right makes the case he is a leader.
